We all have our own individual definitions of happiness, but people still ask, “What is happiness?” In fact, it’s one of the top internet searches, which means there are plenty of people who aren’t currently experiencing it and are certainly searching for the answers.
Based on surveys and sociologist data from around the world, there are four basic areas that contribute to experiencing happiness for most humans. If you are strong in all four of these things, you are almost certainly a very happy person.
1. Good relationships with the people you love.
Humans are pack animals, so relationships are a basic human need. In fact, babies die without touch and attention, even if they are fed properly. Working on relationships is also good for the brain. It’s in my top 5 things to prevent/reverse dementia. The picture to the right shows (from front to back) PJ, Alex (X Gym trainer) and her fiancee Brody, Michael Lee (X Gymer and PJ’s best man at his wedding), Bev (PJ’s wife), and in the far back, Jim, X Gym trainer, who is performing on the keyboards at Kirkland’s Summerfest concert just a couple of weeks ago.
This is a perfect Xample of good relationships with people we love.
2. Connecting with a higher power.
The belief that there is something higher than oneself also ranked consistently in the top four among countries of the world. This is especially true for people who place a priority on coming together in community settings based on this higher power, such as churches.
3. Doing what you love, usually with others.
Sharing experiences and making good memories with others – again, like the picture above – is another key ingredient to happiness. If you look back at the times and places where you were the happiest, it always involved someone else, and some kind of great experience, whether that was doing something, or just experiencing an emotional or bonding moment in a conversation.

4. Happiness comes from simply feeling good.
When it comes to feeling good, health is the most important factor. It’s been said, “When a man has his health he has many hopes and dreams. When he doesn’t, he has only one hope and dream.”
If someone doesn’t have their health, they can be happy temporarily, for a short period of time, but poor health always drags them back down out of the state of happiness. To feel happy faster and easier, and to enjoy those times longer, good health is vital.
It’s also simpler than most people realize because all you need for good health is eating right and being active (including Xercise of course). Sounds simple right? Yes it is! I didn’t say it’s always easy, but it is certainly simple.
P.S. Notice money and possessions weren’t listed here? Those things weren’t even in any of the top 10 lists I found, so why do we keep chasing after those, thinking they will bring us happiness? We aren’t wired that way, but the media and social messages try to make us think that’s the answer…
